Browser Tools

May 1, 2007 by liblearning

I would like to spend more time exploring the browser tools.  I installed weather and allmusic.  As it says on the blurb, everyone is interested in the weather and many frequently check the forecast.  I was surprised at the number of results of a search on allmusic.  There may be a disadvantage to these add-ons because of the fact they must be sponsored and some people may use these sponsored vendors rather than shop around.

The bookmarklet is also a useful tool and will definitely use the MORRIS bookmarklets, in addition to  del.icio.us.

I think we need to spend a significant amount of time exploring such tools as well as the use of the other technologies to plan and organize ourselves in order to make the best use of them.  I’m sure I’m not the only one that could while away the day (and night) wandering around the web with very little to show for it.

Gaming and Virtual Worlds

April 18, 2007 by liblearning

Personally I don’t have a lot of time for gaming and virtual worlds, but perhaps as these virtual worlds develop, they will become more mainstream and perhaps we will be going to these virtual worlds to do our shopping, whether for consumer goods or groceries (much like going to sears.ca).  This concept may also work for libraries.  It all seems rather scifi, but who knows?

My fear is that this sort of development will encourage social solitude rather than live social interaction.

As for gaming, I think it can be used to develop user skills, whether physical or mental dexterity, and knowledge through producing “interactive games” to help students learn.

Facebook

Facebook is not for me.  The majority of groups are frivolous with no real objective, even if there are similar interests.  There is just a lot of nonsense posted - at least in the McMaster network.

LinkedIn makes more sense for keeping up-to-date with changes in colleagues or ex-colleagues contact information.

Free applications

April 17, 2007 by liblearning

There are many free applications on the web which often could replace the ‘paid’ versions but people on the whole feel that you get what you pay for - not always true when looking at free software.

However, I tried Rekid.Net and found it frustrating when attempting to create a button, but even using the default, there was no button created. Nothing happened.  I did create a simple Avatar which you can see here, and I created a text image using this software.

I also tried Google docs & spreadsheets.  It looks as though it would be a good way to collaborate in creating a document, although I didn’t get as far as trying to import it into another word processing program.

del.icio.us

The bookmarks feature is worth knowing - keeping them in one place so that they can be accessed from anywhere.

RSS feeds

April 17, 2007 by liblearning

I can see that this would be useful for keeping up-to-date on specific items of interest.  The only drawback is that this is but one more site that we need to logon (unless we use the option to save our login which I prefer not to do) for keeping abreast of changes.

This is a new way of communicating and I think it will take us a little while to get used to it and make a habit to use these types of tools.

I’ve completed my first wiki assignment.  I just need to find a use in my life for such a tool.

Useful or time gobbler?

February 19, 2007 by liblearning

I would like some ideas on how to make blogging useful, rather than something to gobble up my time.
